Now to deal with all that food and wine! Gisborne offers plenty of opportunity to get in shape – the three city rivers have plenty of traffic with stand-up paddle boarders, Maori outrigger canoes (waka) as well as a kayaking club that won Olympic gold out of a tin shed.

There are two gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, and heated swimming pools.

There are also tennis, archery, croquet and bowling clubs and squash and badminton courts, all very reasonably priced or free.

If you fancy playing team sports like football cricket rugby or netball there are clubs that welcome all abilities, all with active social scenes.
