Gisborne is famous for its great waves and is one of the few places in New Zealand that gets good waves from most swell directions. We have good beach and point breaks, with both left and right hand waves, and luckily no sharks with a taste for people.
Waves here are good enough for Gisborne to be a destination for the O’Neill Coldwater Classic, a six-star event on the ASP world tour event 130 international surfers make it the best surfing competition in New Zealand in nearly 20 years.
You can normally find some gentle waves to learn on, and we are happy to organise you some free lessons and lend you a board.
Stand-up paddle boarding is increasingly popular here on the city rivers as well as out on the Bay.
Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club is just five minutes’ walk from Three Rivers Medical, and has a wide range of canoes, surf skis, surf boats and paddleboards to try.
