Welcome to Susan Ho!

When she was a schoolgirl in England, Dr Susan Ho did some work experience at a hospital and from then her vocation was set in stone.

“The thought of doing something that helped people was always on my mind, but it was the human interaction that I most enjoyed,” says Susan (29), who has been at Three Rivers Medical since October 2019.

“I'd assumed I'd have a hospital role, [but] I decided to do extra training in general practice because that's where you can really offer that contact and continuity of care.”

During her year as a clinical teaching fellow at the University of Bristol, Susan also studied medical education. “That's all part of wanting to share information about health so we can focus on prevention.”

Susan says Three Rivers Medical is the ideal place to “share” what she knows. “I'm really enjoying the non-pharmacological side of practicing here, helping people make lifestyle changes that may help them avoid medication unless it is absolutely needed.”

She's also taken with the cultural richness of Gisborne – one of the reasons she opted to join Three Rivers – and the outdoor experiences available close to hand.

Keen walkers, she and her partner Michael McHugh, who is also a Three Rivers doctor, have already tackled tracks at Mahia, Morere, Cook's Cove and, a bit further afield, Tongariro National Park.

“We both really wanted to see this part of the world and the experiences on offer are just amazing.”
