I love the sea and the lifestyle here, we are very lucky in this country. "Come to New Zealand and see the world".

Jan trained at Gisborne’s Cook Hospital and graduated in 1976,heading to Australia’s East Coast and working in hospitals between Melbourne and Mackay before getting married and returning to New Zealand with her family. Although she loved hospital work she joined Kaiti Medical Center team 18 years ago, and has found general practice nursing has its own benefits. “I love the variety of work, the staff; we’re all like family really.”

Education is the key to improving the health of people here, she says. “I feel for some of the kids we see. There are some great parents out there, but some let their kids get to a bad state before they bring them in. We need to keep pushing the message that neglect is abuse and educate the kids on taking care of their own health.

In her spare time Jan enjoys time with her family and friends, playing sport and dancing. “I love the sea and the lifestyle here, we are very lucky in this country.
