Laura Pepere - Clinical Nurse Specialist, falls prevention
She is the only nurse on the ACC pilot to be based in primary health. Laura’s role allows her to work alongside all the General Practices within the Tairawhiti district to help prevent falls in the community.
Previously she worked at Turanga Health in Gisborne and at its general practice in Te Karaka. In 2013 Laura raised an amazing $1900 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand after she became the unexpected poster girl for the annual Shave for a Cure campaign.
Unlike most shavees who simply shaved their hair, Laura decided to lop most of hers off at the beginning of the week. Then with the help of a friend who was a hair dresser Laura launched a week long assault on what remained of her mop. First it was styled into a mohawk. Then every day of Shave Week Laura returned to the salon so the mohawk could be coloured anew. The Gisborne Herald photographer was there every morning to capture the transformation. By the end of the week the 27-year-old mother of two admits her hair was pretty wrecked and she was unsure about her new celebrity status!
Finally, at the end of the week she had what remained of her hair shaved off. Laura hopes others are inspired to take up the cause next year.
