New Zealand’s East Coast is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. Even in winter the weather is often bright and sunny, with a few storms that make the fire a bit cosier.
It sometimes snows on the ranges visible from town, but virtually never at sea level. There are outlets for any hedonistic impulses in local bars restaurants and festivals.
There are also plenty of places where it is quiet enough to hear nature in the secluded beaches rivers forests and mountains and world-class surf.
With plenty of opportunities to try new sports and great fresh food everywhere you turn, New Zealand’s East Coast is the perfect place to age backwards for a while.
If you have seen the Oscar-winning movie Whale Rider – filmed north of Gisborne – you have already had a taste of our region, especially the rich Maori culture which provides a unique flavour to the East Coast: friendly, hospitable, laid-back, rugged and steeped in history.
